We know how easy it is to fall for a soft and cute cuddly toy. They look innocent, are easy to get, and quickly become a child's best friend. But what many don't know is that many modern stuffed animals actually release microplastics, both when the child plays with them and when they are washed. Not only are they made of plastic, but they are made of microplastic!
At Minibello, we are committed to ensuring that the products you buy for your child are safe, not only for your child but also for the environment. That's why we carefully select stuffed animals and textiles, avoiding unnecessary plastic wherever possible.
What exactly is microplastic?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles (under 5 mm) that arise when plastic products, such as clothes, toys, or packaging, break down over time. In textiles, these particles come from synthetic fibers like polyester, acrylic, and nylon.
When a stuffed animal "sheds" small lint or fibers, it is actually tiny pieces of plastic that detach. They can be inhaled, stick to skin and hands, and end up in the washing machine where they are rinsed out into nature. The stuffed animals your child sleeps with are actually their biggest exposure to microplastics.
What happens to microplastics in the body?
In recent years, researchers have found microplastics in blood, lungs, and even in the placenta of pregnant women. Although we do not yet know everything about how microplastics affect health, research suggests that the particles can contribute to inflammation, cell irritation, and disruptions in the hormone system, especially if the plastic contains chemicals like phthalates or bisphenols.
Children are especially vulnerable because their bodies are still developing, and because they often put things in their mouths or sleep close to their stuffed animals.
That's why we choose differently
At Minibello, we want to make it easier to choose safe and sustainable alternatives.
Most of our stuffed animals are made of organic cotton, linen, or other natural materials, completely free of plastic fibers that can shed microplastics.
For some handmade models, recycled polyester is used as filling, but this is sealed in an inner bag of organic cotton so that no fibers escape. This way, existing plastic is reused without your child being exposed to it.
We are now also introducing a range of plastic-free stuffed animals made of 100% cotton, for those who want a completely natural alternative from the inside out.
